9 Mar 2024Laurentian University well represented at PDAC 2024 Convention in Toronto
(March 8, 2024) - Laurentian University students, staff, and faculty spent four days engaging with delegates from across the global mining sector earlier this week at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). Laurentian community members from the Goodman School of Mines, the Harquail School of Earth Sciences, the Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC), and several other programs represented Laurentian at various events, which included a research poster competition where three Laurentian graduate students took home awards.
At the trade show portion of the event, Laurentian University experts spoke with attendees about leveraging education, research, and technology to close existing and future knowledge and skills gaps in the mining industry. Meanwhile, the Northern Ontario Mining Showcase was an opportunity for the Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation’s (MIRARCO) to demonstrate cutting-edge services, solutions, technologies, and research, including the highly anticipated Centre for Mine Waste Biotechnology.
More than 100 industry partners and Laurentian Alumni attended “Breakfast with Canada’s Mining University”, hosted by one of Laurentian University’s major donors and supporters, Jonathan Goodman, President and CEO of Dundee Corporation. During the event, a new promotional video was unveiled, showcasing Laurentian’s undergraduate and graduate education that encapsulates the entire mining cycle from exploration, to Indigenous partnership to environmental sustainability, to good corporate governance.
The Student Minerals Colloquium poster competition featured 87 posters from 30 universities across 12 countries. Laurentian graduate students won three of nine available awards. The posters are an opportunity for students to present their innovative research that will contribute to the evolution of the mining industry. Master’s student Nathan Carter won 2nd place in the Master’s category. In the same category, Maggie Laverge won 3rd place. In the PhD category, Adrian Rehm won 2nd place.
