The Geological Survey of Canada, in conjunction with Laurentian University’s Metal Earth program and the University of Saskatchewan, seeks a Post-Doctoral Fellow (PDF) to undertake research on Pb and Nd isotopic characteristics of gold endowed sequences through time.
The project will involve analysis of a unique dataset comprising 10,000 Pb analyses of ores and host rocks and over 5,000 Nd analyses of related sequences from Archean and Proterozoic terranes worldwide. The aim is to investigate and understand observed critical differences in model source mu between gold-rich terranes such as Abitibi and generally less well-endowed Paleoproterozoic terranes. The PDF will compile and synthesize existing datasets made available by a number of collaborating research institutions. They will acquire new data where warranted and work closely with Metal Earth’s regional Nd and Hf metallogenic projects. Some fieldwork will be required.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in U-Pb and Nd isotopic systems, Precambrian geology and tectonics. Knowledge of gold and VMS ore systems will be a significant asset, as is a demonstrated facility with management of relational databases.
The position will be based at the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa, with expected frequent travel to Sudbury for collaboration with Metal Earth project members and to Saskatoon for collaboration with the Saskatchewan Isotope Laboratory. The term is for one year with a potential for renewal. Salary range is 55-75K per year, depending on experience, and includes benefits as outlined by Natural Resources Canada’s Postdoctoral Research program. The successful candidate will be hired as a term Scientific Research (SE-RES) employee.
