MT Geophysical Survey Launch
MERC recently awarded the Magnetotelluric (MT) acquisition contract to Complete MT Solutions as part of the Metal Earth project in Abitibi and Wabigoon subprovinces of Ontario and Western Quebec.

This May, the MT Geophysical Survey will begin along the same transects as the Seismic survey.

Superior Data Compilation
Metal Earth delivered a Superior Data Compilation which is a comprehensive dataset of integrated and standardized geospatial geological data within the Superior Craton. The compilation also presents relevant geospatial data released from several geological surveys for use in ArcGIS. The purposes of this compilation is to provide a platform for geoscientists to seamlessly visualize, interrogate, and investigate geological information across political boundaries.
The project was lead by three Metal Earth authors and several project collaborators. You may download the PDF here and visit the webpage for a full GIS Dataset download.

Welcome New Research Associates
MERC welcomes four new research associates to the Metal Earth project who will begin on May 1st, 2018. Metal Earth is excited to welcome new members each with a unique background and research focus to continue to drive the project forward.
Ben Frieman
Ben will be contributing to geological investigations in the Western Wabigoon subprovince with a focus on the Dryden area transect. Ben comes to us directly from completion of his PhD in structural geology and tectonics at the Colorado School of Mines where he focused on the Abitibi subprovince through investigations of the U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic record of detrital zircon grains from successor basins such as Timiskaming-type deposits. Ben completed a MSc in Earth Sciences at the Univeristy of Maine and a BSc in Geology and Geophysics at the University of Minnesota.
Kate Rubingh
Kate's focus on Metal Earth will be working on the Larder Lake transect in Ontario. Her previous work experience was garnered working primarily for; Vale in Thompson Manitoba, SRK Consulting in Sudbury and the CNGO office in Nunavut. She managed surface drilling operations, geotechnical and hydrogeological programs, and worked in regional exploration and regional mapping programs. She is currently completing her PhD research in Mineral Deposits at Laurentian University and completed her MSci in Geological Sciences at Durham University and her MSc in Mineral Exploration at Queen's.
Zsuzsanna Toth
Zsuzsanna will be working on the Geraldton transect in the Wabigoon subprovince where she will spend the summer mapping along the transect. She completed her PhD at Laurentian University studying the geology of an orogenic gold deposit (Hardrock deposit, Geraldton, ON) and the hosting greenstone belt with a focus on structural geology, ore geology, geochemistry and geochronology. Her MSc project focused on a low-sulfidation type epithermal hydrothermal system in northern Hungary at the Eötvös Loránd University, in Budapest, Hungary where she also completed her BSc.
Shawna White
Shawna recently completed her PhD and MSc in structural geology and tectonics at the University of Alberta and HBSc at Memorial University. She has a strong background in structural geology, with a focus on combining field mapping with geophysical data to produce geological maps and 3D structural frameworks. Her post-doc at MERC will be supported by First Cobalt and will focus on integrating historic data from the Cobalt camp, combined with new Metal Earth and First Cobalt Seismic and MT data, along with ongoing structural/stratigraphic framework of the camp.

Field Mapping Course
August 27th - September 7th, 2018
(Opportunity for industry participants full course registration)

Contact Dr. Harold Gibson hgibson@laurentian.ca
About the course:
This is a 10-day course focusing on recognizing, describing, and mapping volcanic lithofacies, alteration types, mineralization, and deformation in a well-exposed Precambrian volcanic succession hosting base and precious metal deposits.

What you can expect:
The course is delivered as a mapping project with evening lectures and discussion following a one-day introductory field trip. An introduction to graphic core logging is provided. Mapping is conducted in teams, and grades are based on the map, structural cross-sections, and a final report.
